The Hungered One
by Ed Bullins
A man wandering in a city park sees, among the feeding birds, a strange one, unfeathered, blue, four legged, a sharp razor beak, a neck too short to reach the ground for food. The man attempts to feed the bird but is attacked by it, his finger torn off and eaten. With naive and sentimental benevolence he attempts to carry the creature home, to care for it, to relieve its suffering and hunger. But it continues to tear and feed on him as the sounds of the park and the surrounding city are transformed into the sounds of the jungle and its predators.
