Teaching English

by Gary Soto

In addition to his writing, Gary Soto teaches evening classes of English to Latin American laborers. The classroom and his students were the location and subjects for this radio piece. Soto describes his efforts to make English useful to his students, to help them get jobs and to understand the ways of this country. Many class sessions were recorded. A neighboring Guatemalan church choir transposing Christian hymns into Guatemalan folk and popular rhythms became another acoustical element.
